Preparing Interview Questions

how to get started

Using the Interview Guide Template (rtf, 354 KB) and the Interview Bank Questions, select a range of questions to ask during the interview. Include questions about the candidate’s background and experience, the key selection criteria, the technical aspects of the role, and the candidate’s motivational fit.

Avoid inappropriate or risky questions

Carefully consider your choice of questions and how questions are worded. Avoid asking:

  • leading questions (“so, you like working as part of a team?”)
  • personal questions, including questions about their home or family life
  • questions that are not directly relevant to the job requirements.

Phrase questions carefully

Do not ask “How much can you travel?” Ask “This role requires travel 50 per cent of the time. Can you meet this requirement?”

Do not ask “Would it bother you to travel with a man?” Ask “You may be required to travel with your manager. Does this present any problems?"

ASSIGN THE QUESTIONS

Ensure each selection committee member knows what their role is during the interview. For example,

  • which questions will each committee member ask
  • who will open and close the interview.
