When to Make Direct Appointments or Conversions

Casual or fixed term staff

It may be appropriate to make a Direct Appointment where the staff member has been working with the University on a casual and fixed-term basis for up to twenty-four months.

You may also make an Appointment by Conversion for casual or fixed term staff in accordance with the Macquarie University Enterprise Agreement .

Fixed-term grant funded

Direct Appointment may be made when the fixed-term grant funded appointments have been determined by granting body, such as the Australian Research Council.

Return to work program

Direct Appointment may be made when it is part of a staff member's return to work program

Changing Work Requirements

Direct Appointment may be made when a staff member is redeployed or transferred to a comparable position to mitigate the effects of restructuring, managing change in accordance with the Macquarie University Enterprise Agreement or changing work requirements

Position is vacant in 12 months

Direct Appointment may be made when a candidate has been deemed appointable through a competitive selection process and the same role or a similar role becomes vacant in the following 12 months

Specialised skills requirement

Direct Appointment may be made when a role requires a highly specialised skill set which does not exist in the University, including the ability to take advantage of the opportunity to engage eminent academics or professionals.
