Giving Candidates Feedback

Some candidates may request post-selection feedback. It is good practice to give specific feedback if requested. It can also be an effective way of reinforcing the University’s image as a good employer. Here are some tips on how you can give feedback.

reiterate the selection criteria

Remind the candidate of the selection criteria. Make it clear that the decision was based on the match to the selection criteria and in this case, another candidate had a stronger, overall match.

be balanced

Give the candidate a brief overview of how he or she matched each of the selection criteria. In so doing, highlight both the areas of strength as well as those in which he or she could improve. Be matter of fact and open. While it’s certainly okay to provide some insights, try to avoid giving direct career advice or coaching in this context.

highlight the competitive nature of the process

Reiterate to the candidate that there were a number of candidates for the role and where appropriate, comment on the calibre of the candidate pool.

encourage questions

Provide an opportunity for the candidate to ask questions about the selection process. Remember, most candidates will genuinely be seeking information they can use to enhance their future chances of securing a role.

be respectful

Thank the candidate for his or her interest in the role and for taking the time to apply.
