Cost Planning and Approval

Recruitment and selection is an investment of time and financial resources in attracting the right people. The cost of not getting the right person for the job is significant and can’t be underestimated.

You will need to consider the budget implications of your new recruit. See salary schedules in the Macquarie University Enterprise Agreement.

Plan and manage the cost of hiring

The Hiring Manager is also accountable for ensuring that the costs associated with recruitment are minimised where possible. They include:

  • Time costs: The down time and hidden costs including responding to enquiries and taking time to read resumes, interview and advise unsuccessful candidates.
  • Financial cost: For example, the cost of advertising.

Avoiding costs associated with poor selection decisions

TThese costs can be difficult to quantify but may include:

  • employment related advice or litigation
  • team morale issues - people who are not a good fit to the role require more time and attention from their managers. Time that managers can spend on developing other team members is reduced
  • lost business opportunities, disruption to business continuity and client service
  • time required to train additional new employees
  • impact on brand or reputation.

Getting the right person to approve the budget and to approve your requisition to hire

Before commencing recruitment, you need to receive approval from the staff member responsible for the budget. In some instances, the Hiring Manager is responsible for the budget. In the faculties, the Faculty General Manager or Faculty HR Manager can advise on the budget implications.

When you create a job requisition in Taleo, you must select your Head of Office, Dean or their delegate to approve your requisition.
