Job Analysis

Job analysis is a process for gathering information about specific roles or Job Families.

Why are we doing this?

Job analysis is the best way to understand a specific role or Job Family as it involves talking directly to staff performing the roles.

The information collected during the job analyses will be used to develop Capability Frameworks for specific roles and Job Families.

What’s involved?

There are four key stages in a job analysis:

  1. A review job relevant data such as Position Descriptions and Organisation Charts.
  2. Facilitated group and one-on-one discussions with staff within specific roles or Job Families. During these focus groups, staff will be asked questions about how their role works (e.g., what does a typical day look like and what sorts of tools, systems and processes do you work with?).
  3. One-on-one discussions with managers.
  4. A review of the draft Capability Framework by staff and managers who have participated in group and one-on-one discussions.

Who will be involved?

The job analyses will be conducted by staff from Organisation and Staff Development.

We will be inviting some staff from across the University to provide input by participating in group or one-on-one discussions.

If you are not invited to participate in a group or one-on-one discussion, you are welcome to contribute by completing a Job Analysis questionnaire.  This can be accessed by emailing Kylie Harrison (kylie.harrison@mq.edu.au) once all group and one-on-one discussions for your role or Job Family have been completed.

When will it happen?

This is a long term project that will run until the end of 2012. The job analysis for some Job Families will be conducted beginning in June this year while for others it may not be until later next year.

We’ll invite staff to attend lunch time information sessions prior to the launch of the job analyses for specific roles and Job Families. During these sessions, we’ll provide more detailed information about the project and how you may be involved and give you an opportunity to ask questions.
